Nilam Cow Sanctuary: A Home of Second Chances

A Home of Second Chances

Nilam Cow Sanctuary

Nestled in a leased mango grove in Kadavur, Madurai, the Nilam Cow Sanctuary was set up to give back to the cattle who have given so much to us.

Our core mission is to provide a permanent, safe, and humane home for cows, bulls, and calves. Stopping them from ending up in slaughterhouses is at the heart of what we do. Here, they are allowed to live out their natural lives in peace, with dignity and care.

Animal Welfare: Cows and Calves Care

Our sanctuary is built around one family: mother cow Lakshmi, her daughter Kasthuri, her son Rocket, and Kasthuri's newborn calf.

Together with 5 rescued calves — Sevalai, Chinnathambi, Karuppu Nila, Vennila and Karuthamma — we care for 9 animals.

They live in our mango grove. An experienced family provides food, medical care, and daily care. Cow dung becomes vermicompost for plants.

Next Step

Calm cows for quiet cuddling time for children with special needs, in nature.

Our Rescued Calves

Five calves were rescued while they were being transported to a slaughterhouse and have now settled into a life of safety at Nilam.

Each of them saved by Nilam on their way to a slaughterhouse. We paid to bring them home, and now they are safe, loved, and free. Here, we provide daily feeding, shelter, and regular veterinary care. But more than that, we give them dignity.

Benefits

Benefits of the Cow Sanctuary

1. Ecological Benefits

We carry out sustainable farming by putting cow dung and urine to use as organic manure. This helps build up soil fertility and cut down on chemical inputs.

2. Cultural and Ethical Values

Protecting cows helps us uphold the philosophy of non-violence and reverence for all living beings. It allows us to pass on traditional values of compassion to future generations.

3. Calf & Cattle Protection

When cows or bulls age out of farm work or dairy, they are often left behind and sent to slaughterhouses. At Nilam, we step in to ensure these voiceless animals are not discarded. Instead, they are given lifelong care, respect, and shelter.

4. Cow Cuddling Therapy

Connect Without Words. Heal With Presence.

At Nilam Cow Sanctuary, something beautiful happens — people connect with cows, and cows connect with people.

There are no words, no expectations, no judgment. Just a quiet, unusual bonding that takes place heart to heart.

This is why our sanctuary also functions as a therapeutic centre. In Cow Cuddling Therapy, you can simply hug a cow, feed her by hand, sit alongside her in the shade, or just observe her calm, steady presence.

As you slow down and tune into the moment, stress begins to ease out. The cows' gentle energy helps children with Autism find calm and connection, and helps adults work through anxiety and depression.

It's not about doing anything. It's about being with.

And in that being, you'll find a deep sense of peace, comfort, and a much-needed change within you.

Visit us to experience a place where humans and animals live in harmony with nature.

The sanctuary is also open to you. Come spend time with them. Sit, observe, and feel the quiet healing that happens when humans and animals connect. We call it therapeutic relaxation — they call it friendship.

We started with 5. Our mission is to save more from harm and extinction.
