Nilam Cow Sanctuary: A Home of Second Chances

Nestled in a leased mango grove in Kadavur, Madurai, the Nilam Cow Sanctuary was set up to give back to the cattle who have given so much to us.

Our sanctuary is built around one family: mother cow Lakshmi, her daughter Kasthuri, her son Rocket, and Kasthuri's newborn calf. Together with 5 rescued calves — Sevalai, Chinnathambi, Karuppu Nila, Vennila and Karuthamma — we care for 9 animals.

  • Nutritious and healthy food
  • Clean and spacious shelter
  • Regular veterinary care and medical support
  • Daily mindful interaction and contemplative time

Vision & Mission

Purpose and Goals

Vision

Self-reliant and culturally rooted future where indigenous and marginalised communities across all lands prosper through sustainable livelihoods, dignity, and harmony with nature and other living beings — preserving traditional knowledge while standing united as socially and economically empowered people in solidarity with indigenous communities everywhere.

Mission

To empower indigenous and marginalised communities by rolling out women-led enterprises, setting up fair markets for indigenous products, bringing back traditional crafts, and carrying out holistic wellbeing programmes.

We build a non-violent, circular economy that looks after people, and other living beings, and ecology — holding on to traditional knowledge and standing up for dignity across all lands.

Women Empowerment

Heritage Skills, Sustainable Livelihoods: Empowering Women Artisans

We empower women by recognizing and strengthening indigenous craft skills rooted in local cultures and traditions. Across communities, women and men together preserve invaluable heritage knowledge.

Women are especially skilled in weaving, embroidery, natural dyeing, pottery, beadwork, and basketry, while in crafts such as woodcraft, they work alongside men — often with their contribution remaining unrecognized.

Because when women thrive, cultures, communities, and sustainable economies thrive with them.

Holistic Wellbeing Centre

Science and Tradition

At Nilam, we believe true health is about balance — of body, mind, land, and community. Our Holistic Wellbeing approach brings together India's ancient healing systems with modern scientific understanding.

Siddha Medicine

One of the oldest systems of medicine from Tamil Nadu. Siddha looks into the root cause of illness by balancing the three humours — Vatha, Pitha, and Kapha.

Ayurveda

The science of life from Kerala and across India. Ayurveda helps you tune into your body's unique constitution or Prakriti.

Foot Reflexology & Body Therapies

Your feet hold a map of your whole body. Gentle pressure on specific points helps ease out stress, improve circulation, and support organ function.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga at Nilam is more than movement. It is a therapeutic practice tailored to your body and mind.

Cow Cuddling Therapy

Connect Without Words. Heal With Presence.

At Nilam Cow Sanctuary, something beautiful happens — people connect with cows, and cows connect with people. There are no words, no expectations, no judgment. Just a quiet, unusual bonding that takes place heart to heart.

In Cow Cuddling Therapy, you can simply hug a cow, feed her by hand, sit alongside her in the shade, or just observe her calm, steady presence.

It's not about doing anything. It's about being with.
